Medicaid enforcement could push out thousands of mentally ill | Huntersville Herald

As many as 1,200 mentally ill adults, scores of them living in the Lake Norman area, could be forced out of assisted-living facilities as the state tries to enforce a Medicaid rule concerning mental health care centers.

The rule requires assisted-living facilities with more than 16 beds have no more than half of their residents diagnosed with a mental illness. The rule is decades old, but the state is now asking the homes to comply or fall under the designation of “institution of mental disease.” Mentally ill residents in those facilities cannot receive Medicaid funding.

Man accused of killing, burning mother gets hearing | The Asheville Citizen-Times

FRANKLIN — A Macon County man believed his mother was the Whore of Babylon and was trying to poison him when he shot her and burned her body in the backyard, according to court testimony today.

Harold Jason Campbell would later tell a doctor at a state mental hospital that he was getting computer messages directing him to kill his mother in 2006.

CenterPoint rejected for Medicaid-waiver program | JournalNow.com

CenterPoint Human Services is likely to need more money from the four counties it serves — Forsyth, Davie, Stokes and Rockingham — if it is to remain as their oversight agency for behavioral-health providers.

The N.C. Department of Health and Human Services said Tuesday that CenterPoint was among four local management entities (LME) in North Carolina whose applications for Medicaid waiver programs were denied. The department had until Monday to select the qualified LMEs. CenterPoint needs to improve its liquidity, among other things, according to a consultant the state hired to review applications.

Man who targeted area churches going to prison | WCNC.com Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A Massachusetts man who threatened to burn four churches in Charlotte and the local NAACP has been sentenced to 15 months in prison.

However, 46-year-old Jeffrey Smith has been released to the custody of mental health officials because he has already been in jail since last summer.
