‘What can we do?’ – The Carrboro Citizen

Unfortunately, in this career as in many other public service-oriented fields, we often come into contact with people who are experiencing a crisis or in need of specialized services.

Recently, three co-workers and I attended a 40-hour Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training program in Hillsborough. Coordinated by the OPC Area Program, CIT is a collaboration of law-enforcement agencies, advocacy organizations (the Mental Health Association in Orange County and NAMI), treatment providers (such as Freedom House Recovery Program) and OPC.

Two standoffs with police sent Kenneth Eldimore Allison not to jail, but to a hospital for a psychiatric evaluation.

What happens next is anyone’s guess, including law enforcement.

And the system probably worked about as well as it can, even though Allison, 54, could well be back on the streets within days, raising the possibility of another confrontation with police.

Without Allison committing any more serious crimes, it’s about all the system can — or probably should — do, law enforcement officials and mental health experts say.
