Mecklenburg County mismanaged a housing program for people with mental illness, with officials failing to keep adequate records and some residents living in conditions that were not “decent, safe and sanitary,” according to a new federal report.
The report sheds new light on problems with a multimillion-dollar housing initiative previously managed by Mecklenburg Open Door, a troubled nonprofit that until last October was one of the county’s largest mental health contractors.
