Mecklenburg County’s largest hospitals can afford to care for indigent patients and run a psychiatric hospital without taxpayer help, several commissioners said Wednesday.
They were reacting to the county manager’s proposal to eliminate the decades-long practice of reimbursing local hospitals for indigent care and to phase out subsidies for the county-owned psychiatric hospital on Billingsley Road.
