Forsyth Medical Center deserves praise for significantly reducing the number of long waits for patients who need beds at state psychiatric hospitals. The legislature needs to reform the mental-health-care system so the patients won’t be waiting in the first place. But until it does, efforts like Forsyth Medical’s are crucial to help these vulnerable patients and their families — and to ease the strain on emergency-room workers and law-enforcement agencies that must provide officers to sit with patients being committed for psychiatric care.
