Editorial: Tale of two shootings underscores need for mental-health-care reform | Winston-Salem Journal

There are hard similarities between the police shooting in Mount Airy on Friday and the one in Winston-Salem on May 25. In both cases, a troubled person fired on officers, who then returned fire, and the shooter was killed. In the Mount Airy case, police Chief Dale Watson and Capt. Alan Freeman were hit by shotgun pellets that only by the grace of God didn’t cause life-threatening injuries.

If there is any lesson here, it’s that the loved ones of people with mental-health and substance-abuse problems must do all they can to get them help before it’s too late. And our communities and legislators must work all the harder to make that help available by repairing our state’s terribly flawed mental-health-care system.
