The scenario describes the downfall of New River Behavioral Healthcare of Boone, which had served 13,000 residents in a five-county section of Northwest North Carolina before the process for its removal began two weeks ago.

The events are eerily similar to the August 2005 collapse of a Forsyth County provider, HopeRidge Centers for Behavioral Health, and its rocky relationship with its local management entity, CenterPoint Human Services.
