Carolinas HealthCare System CEO Michael Tarwater disclosed Tuesday that he has offered a plan to Mecklenburg County officials that could reduce the county’s health care bill by $10 million next year.

The suggestion, which Tarwater said he made to County Manager Harry Jones in early April, would permanently eliminate county funding for inpatient care of patients who are uninsured or underinsured.

It also would provide savings from efficiencies in delivering mental health care and from a $1.3 million rebate out of the nearly $16 million Carolinas HealthCare received from the county this year for indigent care
