With the credibility of the State Bureau of Investigation torpedoed by disclosures of evidence-twisting and pseudo-science, Attorney General Roy Cooper is manfully trying to set things right.

His reputation and political career are at risk. It’s not yet clear how he let the SBI get so out of hand – too trusting? too focused elsewhere? – and some of the agency’s problems predate his time in office, even though that goes back to the beginning of 2001. But the mess is now Cooper’s to clean up.
