Here’s sobering news: North Carolina’s prisons house more than six times as many people with serious mental illnesses as the state’s psychiatric hospitals.

A new report from the Wake County chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness highlighted that stark reality in a presentation Wednesday at the legislative building. Among the advocates’ short-term goals is keeping the doors open at Raleigh’s Dorothea Dix Hospital, which is shutting down most of its beds because of a lack of funding.
