Old Vineyard Behavioral Health Services gets OK to build $13.8 million psychiatric emergency department

Old Vineyard Behavioral Health Services is free to build a $13.8 million psychiatric emergency department in Winston-Salem.

The group received a certificate-of-need for the 24-hour department from state regulators last week, said Rob McCartney, the chief executive of Old Vineyard.

The center would give local and statewide residents a new option for psychiatric treatment, an idea that has been encouraged by mental-health, health-care and law-enforcement officials. The 50 beds are being transferred to Old Vineyard from a state hospital in Morganton
