Two people from the Wilson area, identified for purposes of a court ruling as 39-year-old Marlo M. and 49-year-old Durwood W., are able to live independently in their own apartments, thanks to help from federal and state governments in providing ’round-the-clock care.

It is a good arrangement for these people, who have mental illness and developmental disabilities, and it follows the letter and spirit of the Americans with Disabilities Act, which requires governments to provide help in “the most integrated setting appropriate.”
