I'm no longer mentally ill, Hayes testifies – Winston Salem Journal

The fate of Michael Hayes, who killed four people and wounded five others in a 1988 shooting spree on Old Salisbury Road, will be decided later this week by a judge who heard Hayes testify that he is no longer mentally ill.

Judge Steve Balog of Forsyth Superior Court said yesterday that he would issue a ruling by the end of the week on whether Hayes should remain at Dorothea Dix Hospital in Raleigh, where he has been since he was found not guilty by reason of insanity in a 1988 shooting spree that left four people dead and five others wounded.
