A Chapel Hill resident suggested in a Dec. 7 letter that the state’s budget deficit could be partially addressed by turning the Dorothea Dix property in Raleigh over to mixed-use private development, with residential, retail and offices.

Great idea! Let’s also turn the N.C. Jaycee Burn Center in Chapel Hill into a day spa, or perhaps a boutique hotel. It already has beds.

Additionally, there’s lots of wasted green space in the football stadiums on the various college campuses in the UNC system that could be used for condos. And the governor’s mansion would make a really cool B&B.
