Those who believe that the state can cut millions of dollars painlessly haven’t walked in Hazel Ashworth’s shoes. Reporter Vicky Eckenrode wrote in Tuesday’s StarNews about the 78-year-old’s struggle with the daily activities most of us think of as routine.

There are a many people out there like Ashworth, ailing adults who need a little help around the house to avoid going to a nursing home or assisted-living center. Because she is not a wealthy woman, Ashworth depends on Medicaid to pay for someone to hep her out a couple of hours a day with such things as dressing and bathing.
