As a volunteer guardian ad litem, I am seeing the way I raise my own two children against the backdrop of a bigger and darker world of very young teenagers in foster care with mental health issues and children of their own.
According to a mental health professional in my network, many of these traumatized teenagers “are like toddlers raising toddlers.” They seem more like toddlers with hormonal swings raising toddlers.
