A memorial service last Saturday for Joe Cameron Pence, 44, at a United Methodist Church in Rougemont, a small community north of Durham, did not catch the public’s attention, nor was it expected to.

Pence was not a community leader, not a taxpayer or a family man. He didn’t have a job, didn’t own a car or a house, and had it not been for his baptism at that church on Easter Sunday, 2009, he probably would not have been remembered in a church service.
