SKYLAND — The spot where there is now a bridge bearing his name was more than just stretch of road to Sgt. Jeff Hewitt, a Buncombe County sheriff’s deputy killed in the line of duty in 2004, his widow said Friday.

Hewitt often fished the French Broad River underneath the old Long Shoals Road bridge, and it was a landmark on his regular commute to his home in Avery’s Creek, Tracie Hewitt told the more than 175 people who attended a ceremony to dedicate the new bridge to Hewitt.
