A 22-year-old man accused of fatally stabbing his grandfather “just went crazy” before the killing, the young man’s grandmother said Wednesday.
Bettye Smith said she attributes the crime to her grandson’s mental illness.
Connor Smith is charged with murder in the death of his 80-year-old grandfather, Talbert “Buddy” Smith, Monday night in Sapphire. Transylvania County Sheriff David Mahoney said in a phone interview Wednesday that he expects to file more charges as the investigation continues. He also said he had no further information to release. He did confirm an autopsy has been completed and the victim died from stab wounds.
