In Robert Burn’s poem, To a Mouse, which became the basis of John Stienbeck’s Of Mice and Men Burn’s says; “The best-laid plans o’ mice an’ men Gang aft a-gley, An’ lea’e us nought but grief an’ pain For promised joy” which has come to be loosely translated to “the best laid plans of mice and men often go astray and leave us with but grief and pain for promised joy.” Such seems to all too often be the case in Raleigh (and Washington) these days.
