ASHEVILLE — Authorities arrested a resident of an Asheville rest home on charges she set the facility on fire and tried to burn a nearby retirement center.

The dozen residents in the Richmond Hill Rest Home building were safely evacuated when the fire broke out Wednesday night, manager Jeff Clifton said.

Clearly Clifton said the blaze was ignited on the bed in West’s room. West is mentally handicapped, he said.

“It’s unfortunate,” Clifton said. “She obviously was having some mental difficulties.” Story continues here ➤
